Organic Baby Skin Care – Back when we didn’t know any better, people would slather anything touted to be good on their baby’s skin and hair. They gave no thought to the safety or efficacy of a product since it was on store shelves.

However, in 2019, with the advancement of science, and with stronger and stricter third party consumer protection organizations in place, people are more empowered than ever to make wiser choices about the products they buy. This is especially true when it comes to organic baby skin care products.

Understanding Lab Created Fragrance In Baby Skin Care
Understanding Lab Created Fragrance In Baby Skin Care

Baby skincare and personal care products, across the board, have been known to contain potentially dangerous chemicals and toxins such as mercury, lead, and formaldehyde. This can have disastrous effects on the skin and overall health.

You might think you are reducing your risk of exposure when you buy skin care products from well-known brands. However, the truth is that even established brands sometimes may make use of chemicals and ingredients that you would not want on your baby’s skin to absorb. These can be hidden under the guise of fragrances.

Fragrance formulas are considered trade secrets. Manufacturers do not need to reveal the chemicals used to create the scent. EWG (Environmental Working Group) posted an article listing 3,163 ingredients that “hide” behind the word fragrance.

Some of them have demonstrated to be toxic to humans. Yet, you use them on your body, as well as your baby, whose skin is naturally more sensitive, tender, and delicate [1].

Common Ingredients In Commercial Baby Products
Common Ingredients In Commercial Baby Products

Below are only some of the more disturbing, yet common ingredients you may find in baby skin care products.

Parabens

Parabens are synthetic chemical preservatives that help extend the shelf life of food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and personal care products (including baby products). Parabens also prevent the growth of mold and bacteria.

However, some studies point to parabens being endocrine-disrupting chemicals, which means it can affect your body’s natural hormone production and possibly increase your risk of some types of cancer [2].

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate

SLES is an anionic detergent present in soaps, shampoos, tubes of toothpaste, baby wash, and other personal care products. This ingredient has emulsifying properties, which gives a product good lather.

Although it is derived from palm or coconut oil, it is not as innocuous as you might assume. It is, in fact, classified as a “moderate hazard.” Currently, SLES linked to skin and eye irritation. Researchers are still exploring the possibilities of organ toxicity and endocrine disruption [3].

Phthalates

Aside from being a common ingredient in personal care products and cosmetics, phthalates are also common in industrial products, vinyl, and plastic.

Phthalates can act as a plasticizer, or a substance added to make plastic flexible for production. Likewise, it is added to products to soften and moisturize the skin. It is also used to dissolve ingredients, so they coalesce better.

However, some studies suggest that phthalates may result in impaired testosterone production in kids. Perhaps the most insidious thing about phthalates is that it can affect a baby even while they are still in their mother’s womb.

Experts have not yet given a definitive ruling about the risk of phthalates. But, when it comes to your baby, any risk is questionable [4].

These are several examples of other potentially dangerous chemicals and unnecessary additives present in many skin care and baby personal care products. These include alcohol, talc, triclosan, benzophenone, coal tar, BHA and BHT, and oxybenzone.

Ask yourself, even if the concentration of those chemicals fall within the legally allowed amount in the baby skincare and personal care products, do you want to use them? So what can discerning parents do? What safe alternatives are there?

Now that consumers are getting smarter and more aware of how products are manufactured and their ingredient base, it is only natural that they demand something better and safer for them, the environment, and most especially for their babies. Enter organic baby skincare products.

Why Organic Baby Skin Care Products Are The Way To GoWhy Organic Baby Skin Care Products Are The Way To Go

First things first, what exactly is organic? Products and brands may claim to be organic, but what does that entail and what can consumers expect from it?

A product can have a single plant extract, in addition to a long list of chemical ingredients, and still, slap the word “natural” on its label and marketing materials.

Or it may list several natural ingredients on the product label but lose the efficiency of the natural ingredients through the manufacturing process.

The truth is that the U.S. government does not require any formal certification process for personal care products. Manufacturers can deem their products organic or natural as there is no formal definition.

So, what’s a parent to do? Insist on using products whose manufacturers voluntarily put their products to the test (literally) through various accreditation processes.

That way, you can rest assured knowing that these products are free from toxins and filler ingredients. Also, no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers are used in any stage of production.
