What To Expect Those First Few Days
After the journey down the birth canal, every inch of your baby boy’s arms and legs and fingers and toes have been examined and counted. The maternal and child health specialist has visited. Feeding and burping your baby have been practiced and umbilical cord care and bathing questions have been asked.
Regardless of your baby’s gender, there are a few things to prepare for during the first few days of your child’s life. It is easy for first-time parents to feel overwhelmed. Like every baby, your newborn baby boy will experience irregular sleep patterns. He will fall asleep and awaken at odd hours until he develops his own sleep cycle.
When you first leave the hospital, your newborn baby boy will sleep, drink breast milk or formula and dirty his diapers regularly. Parents will begin to notice a growing pile of laundry, uncompleted chores and a lack of sleep. At this point, take a step back and use this exciting time to make loving memories with your newest family member.

What Should I Expect From My Newborn Baby Boy?
There are a few things that you should expect at this point.
Sensory development
Your new baby will be developing all his senses at this point including his sense of sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch.
Reflexes
Expect your little one to have some surprising reflexes at this point to help him navigate his new world.
Rooting reflex
When touching his cheek or mouth, he will automatically turn his head and make sucking (rooting) motions.
Moro reflex – Also called the “startle reflex,” the baby spreads out his arms and pulls them back them back in. Often, babies cry as experience this reflex.
Palmar reflex
This is the reflex motion of gripping your finger when you place it on his palm [1].
Weight loss
Typically, your son will lose a few pounds right after birth. Weight gain should increase after a week or two. Monitor your baby’s weight to determine if he is growing accordingly to his age.
Circumcision
This is a personal decision on you and your partner’s part. Discuss this option with each other and your pediatrician before your baby is born.
“Fire hoses”
Parents are quick to learn to cover their son’s genitals when changing diapers or giving a bath. Your baby should have been checked for urine blockage before being discharged from the hospital. Sometimes, a congenital disability causes the urine to back up through the urinary tract and cause the kidneys and ureters to swell.
Diaper leakage
Make sure that your son’s penis is pointing downwards when you are changing his diaper, or you may deal with frequent diaper leakage. Even when you have bought the perfect size, if your son’s penis is not pointing in the right direction, you will be changing diapers all the time [2].

Week One
Your newborn baby boy during his first week of life will experience certain changes. The startle reflex will be more pronounced. His umbilical cord may or may not fall off at this point. Expect to see splotches of white or red on his skin. Mothers may be dealing with sore nipples from time to time. It is a good idea to have a maternal and child care specialist visit before the hospital discharge to ensure your baby is breastfeeding correctly. Also, make sure you are using a good nipple cream that will provide comfort for you and ensure your newborn is not absorbing anything toxic.
Week Two
Spit-ups are sure to occur during the first few weeks, so prepare for this by gathering plenty of cloth diapers and clean towels. The best way to minimize the spit ups from your newborn baby boy is to burp him every three to five minutes during feedings, make sure your little one feeds in an upright position and take care not to jostle him. Because your infant is feeding around-the-clock, there will be plenty of wet diapers. Your son’s poop will vary from blackish green to yellow, brown and green. With breastfed babies, the texture can be runny, seedy, curdy or pasty.
Week Three
During the third week, the different crying phases of your little one will become more apparent. Over time, your son’s various cues will be clear. He is already gaining more control over his body compared to the day your baby was born. Although he will be able to hold your finger with his hand, your baby will not be able to hold objects yet. However, he will be able to follow movements.
Week Four
A facial rash can appear during the third and fourth week of your son’s life. It is quite normal if your son’s face appears blotchy at times. These rashes fade as your baby grows. If your son has fine body hair on his back and shoulders, this will eventually disappear as well.
Week Five
At this point, your newborn baby boy will be able to hold objects with his hands as his motor skills develop further. His eye-to-hand coordination still needs work, but changes in his grip are occurring. Your son will be able to lift his head while you carry him to look around more. Your bundle of joy will maintain eye contact longer which is nice because you will be able to keep him busy with objects or toys. Your son will be mesmerized with toys in bright colors or high contrast like black and white compared to those in muted tones. If you want to see how your baby reacts to himself, bring a baby proof mirror nearby, and observe how he becomes curious about this new person!

Now that you have an idea on what to expect when your newborn baby boy has finally arrived, there are a few things left for you to know especially if this is your first time as a parent.
Breastfed babies nurse more often
Breastfed babies find breast milk easier to digest. Prepare yourself for sleepless nights as newborns stomachs are small and need frequent feedings, and breast milk is easier to digest. By one to two months, your son should be developing a more reliable schedule.
Avoid bathing daily
Everybody enjoys a clean, fresh-smelling baby. However, giving your little one a bath every day is not recommended. A sponge bath once a week is enough. Remember that your baby’s skin is still delicate and prone to irritation.
Falling in love with your son may not happen immediately
Many parents fall in love while their baby in utero or when they first view them. However, pediatrician and childhood development expert, Marshall Klaus, estimates that about 30% of moms do not immediately fall in love with their baby due to the stress or exhaustion of giving birth.
Leave the umbilical cord alone
Allow the umbilical cord to heal naturally. Take care to not cover it with the diaper. Do not pick or pull at it. Follow the care directions recommended by your doctor. Contact your pediatrician if you see any signs of infection (swelling, redness, discharge).
He will be crying a lot
Another thing to expect when your little one is born is that he will be crying a lot. Babies cry when they want to express something which is patience is required to understand your baby’s cues. After a while, you will be able to anticipate his needs.
