Is Raspberry Seed Oil Safe For Baby – Yes, red raspberry seed oil has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that make it an optimal ingredient for skin protection. When combined with non-synthetic zinc oxide, it is a natural sunscreen that protects from UVA and UVB rays.

Summer is an excellent time to soak up the sun, but skin needs protection from harmful UV rays, especially infants’ skin. One of the best natural sunscreens is organic red raspberry seed oil. It is cold pressed from red raspberries or Rubus idaeus. What is Rubus Idaeus? Rubus Idaeus is the scientific name for red raspberry.

Organic red raspberry seed oil is rich in essential fatty acids including oleic, alpha-linolenic, and linolenic acid. It also contains substances that moisturize the skin such as tocopherols, carotenoids, and tocotrienols. Organic red raspberry seed oil is an antioxidant that moisturizes the skin while protecting it from UVA rays. It is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and its ability to improve the elasticity of the skin minimizing fine lines and wrinkles [1].

Antioxidants like red raspberry seed oil are commonly used in the cosmetics industry because of their hydrating and occlusive properties. Ingredients in skin care, face oils, creams, lotions or lip balm sometimes include red raspberry oil as its essential oils are great for sensitive and aging skin.

Natural oils like red raspberry seed oil and black raspberry seed oil are considered natural sun protection. They are ideal ingredients in sunscreen, sunblock, lotions and other products that protect various skin types from harmful UV rays. Other natural sun protection like shea and jojoba also provide protection for the skin.

It is important to identify the Sun Protection Factor or SPF of a product. The SPF determines the amount of time it will take your skin to burn when using the sunscreen. While outdoors, achieve high levels of protection provided by red raspberry seed oils [2].

Raspberry seed oil offers higher levels of protection compared to other essential oils like wheat germ, hazelnut, grapeseed, or avocado. It is touted as one of the most effective natural oils for serious skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema. It is rich in vitamin A and nourishes various skin types including oily skin that is vulnerable to acne.

Raspberry seed oil is rich in fatty acids. It contains up to 83% of EFAs or essential fatty acids that are effective in reducing skin oxidation. These antioxidants shield the skin from UV rays and are comparable to the protection offered by titanium dioxide. The Oomah study showed the significance of red raspberry seed oil as an ingredient in sunscreens. It has an SPF of 28 to 50 for UVB and an SPF of 65 to 75 for UVA. While the study recognized the sun protection properties of this natural sunscreen, it also recommended more testing to determine its efficacy [4].

The History Of Raspberries And Raspberry Seed Oil

Raspberries, from which the raspberry seed oil is sourced, are popularly known as fruits. However, raspberries belong to the rose family specifically the genus, Rebus. Raspberries exhibit many rosy similarities including the shrubs and thorny branches.

Hundreds of raspberries are produced by a single bush each year. With a hundred drupelets in each raspberry, producers have devised numerous products containing red raspberry seed oil. Raspberries are harvested during the summer for these antioxidants. Red raspberry oil is popular in refreshing drinks and smoothies, and the roots of the plants are turned into tear and eye ointments.

Palladius, a Roman agriculturist, wrote about the cultivation of raspberries as early as the 4th century. It is assumed that the Romans started its cultivation in Europe based on ecological findings in Britain’s Roman forts. After King Edward mandated the cultivation of raspberries, it became a familiar bush in British gardens. The use of essential oils for food and medicine is also credited to the Romans.

The cultivation of raspberries became widespread in America after the Civil War. Today, raspberries are abundant in the United States and grown mostly in Washington state. Black raspberry, from where black raspberry seed oil comes, is indigenous to North America [3].

Raspberries took some time to become popular since the fruit was expensive and could only be afforded by the rich. The discovery of wild raspberries during the Middle Ages popularized the berries not only as food but also as a remedy for fever, boils, bee stings, and eye inflammations. Processed berries are consumed in the form of jams, jellies, and preserves. Today, raspberries enjoy almost the same popularity as strawberries during summertime.

Raspberry plants are characterized as hardy perennials that grow from 36 to 60 inches in height. The fruits or the drupelets of the raspberry are tiny with seeds in the center. There are as many as 4,000 seeds in a hundred grams of raspberry. Birds carry the seeds and drop them into the ground, facilitating and expanding the growth of wild raspberries [5].

Rubus idaeus is not only an attractive plant, but it is also the source of red raspberry seed oil or the black raspberry seed oil for many herbal remedies. The resulting red raspberry seed oil color varies from reddish to bright gold.

Various manufacturers of essential oil describe its aroma as light and happy. However, unrefined essential oils do not smell like real raspberries. Surprisingly, they have a natural and earthy scent. If the natural scent is intolerable, look for essential oils with the fragrance of sweet raspberry.

Red raspberry seed oil has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that make it an optimal ingredient for skin protection. When combined with non-synthetic zinc oxide, it is a natural sunscreen that protects from UVA and UVB rays.

It contains the following ingredients:

Vitamin E

The Vitamin E content of raspberry seed oil accounts for its ability to rid the skin of free radicals which cause damage and aging. When choosing baby lotions or other skin care products, make sure they contain Vitamin E. The UV protection property of red raspberry oil can be compared to titanium oxide. The seed oil protects skin from UVA and UVB rays which lead to aging and skin cancer [6].

Carotenoid

Raspberry seed oil contains 23 mg/100g of carotenoids which are potent antioxidants. These create yellow, bright red, and orange pigments in plants. Also called phytonutrients, carotenoids aid in photosynthesis but also deactivate or destroy free radicals that damage cells. Carotenoids fight cancer and help prevent cardiovascular diseases [7].

Essential fatty acids

Red raspberry seed oil contains up to 83% of essential fatty acids to include Omega 9, Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. These fatty acids are critical to heart health and healthy skin. Omega 3 fatty acids, which are generally not produced by your body, can be sourced from seafood, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and strawberries. A cup of red raspberries contains up to 155 milligrams of Omega 3 fatty acids. The other fatty acids contained in raspberry seed oil are Myristic Acid, Pentadecanoic Acid, Palmitoleic Acid, Heptadecanoic-Acid, Stearic Acid, Vaccenic acid, Oleic Acid, Linoleic Acid, Alpha Linolenic Acid, and Arachidic Acid. These acids make raspberry seed oil an ideal ingredient for aromatherapy, baby cosmetics, nail care, baby hair care, and lip care.

Ellagic Acid

Ellagic acid is not typically used as an ingredient in skincare products, but it is present in high concentrations in raspberry seed oil. The acid is an antioxidant that keeps collagen healthy which minimizes wrinkles. Ellagic acid also reduces sun damage among babies. Ellagic acid regenerates skin that has been damaged by free radicals.

Phytosterols

Phytosterols, which are considered good fats in plants, are antioxidants that aid in the healthy regeneration of skin and protect against cancer. Products that contain Phytosterols keep the skin healthier and looking younger because of their collagen-production properties. They also keep skin hydrated and maintain skin elasticity.

The sun protection property of raspberry seed oil has often been compared to titanium dioxide. Black raspberry seed oil and red raspberry seed oil contain substances that neutralize free radicals. However, while babies require sun exposure to synthesize Vitamin D, exposure to UV rays can lead to skin damage. The younger the child, the more sensitive the skin.

Using raspberry seed oil is a great way to minimize sun damage. Natural sunscreens like raspberry seed oil are among the most preferred. Avoid using chemical sunblocks for your baby’s skin. Instead, opt for sunblocks that contain titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. Both of these physical sunblocks mirror the light and are not absorbed by the skin.

The folic content of raspberry seed oil keeps hair healthy. Choose a baby shampoo or conditioner with raspberry seed oil to protect the hair and keep it soft and shiny.

The essential oil soothes sensitive skin and is extremely beneficial for infants with eczema or dermatitis.

Combining the flowers of the Rubus idaeus plant with honey creates a treatment for boils, fever, and eye inflammations. Raspberry oil extract has also been used in folk medicine for a sore throat, conjunctivitis, bleeding gums, and wounds.

Manufacturing

Red raspberry seed oil is very popular with manufacturers of baby skincare products because of its ability to block UV rays and keep skin smooth and supple. Babies have sensitive skin, and parents should be extra cautious when choosing products for their babies.

Beginning in 2013, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) started discouraging the use of the word sunblock on products as it is deemed misleading. After all, nothing can ever block the rays of the sun 100%. The FDA has thus classified sunscreens into chemical or physical sunscreens. For infants, opt for natural sunscreens like raspberry seed oil which are sometimes combined with zinc oxide to protect a child’s skin from the sun naturally.
