Pregnancy And Caffeine
Caffeine intake must be monitored carefully during pregnancy.
Each brand of green tea contains different caffeine levels. Typically, there are 30-50 mg per cup.
However, some green teas may contain as much as 70 mg in a single cup.
The caffeine in green tea can worsen typical symptoms of pregnancy such as:
- Irritability
- Nausea/vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Loss of appetite
Mom-to-be may also experience:
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Insomnia
At high consumption levels, the baby can be affected as well in the following ways:
- Premature birth
- Low birth weight
- Withdrawal symptoms in the baby
Green Tea And Folate Levels
Folate is a B-vitamin that is necessary for baby’s development.
A deficiency can restrict fetal growth or cause defects within the spinal cord, such as spina bifida.
Green tea has been found to lower folate levels.
No Specific Pregnancy-Related Benefits
Unlike some herbal teas that quell nausea, green tea does not have any specific health benefits for the pregnant woman or her baby.
For those that want to drink green tea during their pregnancy, multiple studies have shown that an intake of less than 200 mg per day is safe for your growing baby while in-utero.
