What Is Baby Drool Rash?
What is drooling? While drooling is one of the common symptoms of teething, some babies tend to drool even when they are not getting teeth yet. The problem with drooling is that there will always be saliva coming from your baby’s mouth which can get to their chin, neck, and even on their chest. Unfortunately, if you don’t wipe the saliva off as soon as you are able, a baby drool rash under chin, neck, and chest may occur.
If you are going to look at baby drool rash pictures, you will see that the rash appears to be either flat or a raised patch of small red bumps that may appear chapped on your little one’s skin [2]. These rashes can be alarming for first-time parents especially when the redness starts to spread all over their baby’s face, neck, and chest. However, before you start thinking about visiting a children hospital, it is better that you consider its origin and potential treatments.

It’s a good idea for parents to familiarize themselves with the symptoms of a teething rash as well as other types of rashes that may appear due to sensitive skin. Aside from teething, here are other types of rashes that may appear.
Heat rash
This rash typically appears on your baby’s skin when sweat gets trapped under a baby’s clothes. Keep in mind that a baby’s body can overheat quickly, hence you should be attentive as to how you dress your baby up during the summer season.
Baby acne
This can be due to a lack of moisture on their skin, or because an infant’s pores are clogged by dirt, sweat, and oil. This can appear on their cheeks, forehead, chin, and in some cases, on your baby’s body.
Teething rash
This type of rash can travel. Saliva may get on a baby’s mouth, cheeks, neck, and chest and a rash may appear due to excessive moisture and sensitive skin. A teething rash is the same as that of drool rash or dribble rash as skin irritation occurs since there is too much moisture on their sensitive skin. When there is too much drool that flows from their mouth, friction occurs, and the result is a rash [3].

What Causes Baby Drool Rash?
Baby drool rash may be due to teething, but this is not the only reason for so much drool to appear. This red rash generally appears around the mouth, lip, neck, and chest even depending on how excessive their drool is.
One reason behind this is that the salivary glands of babies are not yet controlled very well.
Hence, babies end up salivating even though they still don’t have any teeth yet.
The drool protects their gums as they get ready for new teeth.
Also, the presence of saliva makes it easier for your baby to swallow your milk or the food that you are giving them.
If you think that teething is the only cause for constant drooling in babies, think again [4].

Apply skin barriers
Petroleum jelly and other skin barrier products can also help alleviate the rashes that may develop because they prevent drool from getting in contact with the skin.
Coconut oil
What else can you use to treat the rashes that appear because of teething and drooling? Use coconut oil. Applying this oil on the affected parts of the skin works in two ways. The first one is that it works as a lubricant where it treats the irritation on the face or everywhere else. The second function of this oil is that it contains antibacterial properties that prevent infection from occurring. And because it is safe to use on your little one’s skin, you don’t have to worry about any side effects at all [5].
Protective lotions
You can also apply a protective lotion, ointment or cream on your baby’s skin to alleviate the irritation due to excessive drooling caused by teething. Look for an ointment or cream that is natural and organic to soothe the affected area and encourage healing. If you are using a nipple cream, make sure that is safe. You not only want your nipples to heal but do not want your baby to absorb anything harmful or chemicals that can cause an allergic reaction.

A teething baby may be drooling more than is necessary but if the rashes are starting to worsen even with the remedies that you have used, it may be that there is an underlying condition. Your doctor can rule out a food allergy, yeast infection or pupps rash that may have transferred from you to your baby.

Hi, thank you for sharing this. I would like to ask what our routine should be. My nephew has blisters around his mouth and he rubs off any ointment or lotion we apply.
Hi Famma, try to keep the area very dry. Especially in the first few days its important to make sure the area is dry when the baby uses a paci or after feeding.
